Which date applies

These are the payment rules printed in the SSA's schedule:

  • SSI is paid on the 1st of the month.
  • Social Security is paid on a Wednesday that depends on the beneficiary's birth date: 2nd Wednesday for birthdays on the 1st–10th, 3rd Wednesday for the 11th–20th, and 4th Wednesday for the 21st–31st.
  • People who received Social Security before May 1997, or who receive both Social Security and SSI, are paid Social Security on the 3rd and SSI on the 1st.
  • When a payment day falls on a weekend or federal holiday, payment is made on the preceding business day. That is why some SSI payments arrive at the end of the previous month.

The SSA asks people to allow three additional mailing days before contacting it about a missing payment.

How it is produced
We read the SSA's annual payment calendar (Publication 05-10031) and extract every marked payment day using the calendar's own legend. The 3rd-of-month dates are not marked on that calendar; we apply the rule the calendar prints ("paid on the 3rd", moved to the preceding business day when needed). Every date is then checked against the SSA's payment rules and the federal holiday calendar. Any mismatch stops the update, keeps the previous verified data and alerts the editor.
