How it is produced
We read EIA's weekly tables of regular gasoline prices for 29 areas and diesel prices for 11 and keep each area's weekly history (loaded once from EIA's history pages, from 2021). Before publishing, the weekly table and the history pages must agree on the weeks they share; weeks must be seven days apart; every price must be between $1.00 and $10.00 and move less than $1.50 in a week; and past weeks may never change. Changes, year-ago comparisons and the chart are calculated by us. On update days we check hourly from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET.
