What these rates measure
- The FDIC's "national rate" for each product is the average rate paid by insured banks and credit unions for which data is available, weighted by each institution's share of domestic deposits.
- Savings and interest checking rates are for the $2,500 balance tier. Money market and CD rates average the $10,000 and $100,000 tiers.
- The FDIC publishes new figures on the third Monday of each month (the next business day if that Monday is a federal holiday), based on rates as of the last business day of the previous month.
- These are averages across thousands of institutions; rates offered by individual banks and credit unions vary widely around them.
- The FDIC changed its method on April 1, 2021. Earlier figures, which were weighted by branch and excluded credit unions, are not comparable and are not shown here.

- How it is produced
- After each release we download the FDIC's history workbook and its current national rates page. The two must agree on every product for the latest release. Every release is checked before it is published: all eleven products present, rates between 0.0% and 10.0%, no product moving more than 1.0 point in a month (the largest move since 2021 is 0.45), and past releases never changing. Changes, highs, lows and charts are calculated by us from the FDIC figures. The FDIC's underlying rate data comes from S&P Capital IQ Pro.
