What the jobs report measures

  • The Employment Situation comes from two monthly surveys. A survey of employers (the establishment survey) gives payroll employment, hourly earnings and the workweek. A survey of households gives the unemployment rate, the number of people unemployed, the participation rate and the employment-population ratio.
  • Figures are seasonally adjusted. With each release BLS revises the payroll figures for the two previous months, and once a year, with January data, it revises earlier years to match a fuller count of employment (the annual benchmark).
  • BLS publishes the report at 8:30 a.m. ET, usually on the first Friday of the month, for the month before.

Series
BLS series CES0000000001 (total nonfarm employment), CES0500000003 (average hourly earnings) and CES0500000002 (average weekly hours), all private employees, from the establishment survey; LNS14000000 (unemployment rate), LNS13000000 (unemployed), LNS11300000 (participation rate) and LNS12300000 (employment-population ratio) from the household survey. All seasonally adjusted.
How it is produced
We read the series from the BLS Public Data API and the release dates from BLS's Employment Situation schedule. The monthly payroll change is the difference between months in total nonfarm employment, in thousands, as BLS reports it; the 12-month earnings change is calculated by us and rounded to one decimal. Before anything is published, every series must reach the same latest month and stay within plausible ranges, and no month may appear before its scheduled release. Revisions are shown from the payroll figures this page published at the previous release.
